Hendrik Willem Van Loon Letter - Original Letter
The artist signs this typed letter "Hendrik Willem Van Loon" In full: Hotel Slendid. Nice. France. = Nov xxvi. My dear Sir, the sun is actually shining here. My father used to tell me about the sun but I had not seen that strange orb for so long that I distrusted his stories. And I have just made an other discovery. I passed by car through the Alpes Maritimes. A howling wilderness. Not a house. Often at night one did not see a light for hours at a time. The few remaining peasants are going to cities. A bad business. I expect and hope to sit here quietly and peacefully for four or five months and write my autobiography without however writing anything about myself. It will be hard work but rather amusing. And meanwhile I will becurious to know how you are getting along with finding a Danish publisher for the bible. Tolerance has just appeared in Dutch and in Swedish. But the Danes, thus far, have fought shy of the immortal opera of yours, Lightly creased. Overall, fine condition. Dutch/American artist and writer Hendrik Willem van Loon wrote The Story of Mankind and received the first Newbery Medal for writing the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children in 1922. The typed letter was found in the book The Story of America written by Hendrik Willem Van Loon. The letter was placed in the same envelope together with the letter Hendrik Willem Van Loon typed during his stay at the Hotel Glarisegg in October 1926. Worldwide shipping and insurance: $150
